My First Scare: The Wicked Witch of the West

I remember it rather clearly: a house is blown away by a tornado, it is whirling around in the storm together with furniture and all kinds of stuff. Then, when an evil, green witch is flying on her broomstick past the window and I pull back the blanket over my head.

Of course you know what I’m talking about: The opening of The Wizard of Oz. From what I can remember that scene which was the first time that I had been scared about anything in a movie.

I’m not sure anymore whether I even enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I have seen it plenty of times. Guess there wasn’t much else to watch. The ritual of me watching the movie whilst hiding under a blanket repeated once a year. Traditionally the movie came back into TV during the christmas time if I remember correctly.

From what I remember the movie was mainly weird but I dreaded every scene in which the witch appeared. Logically the highlight of the movie was when she eventually melted away.

Now, almost 40 years later I have seen many, many scary movies, but in hindsight no other movie character has managed to scare me like the Wicked Witch of the West [^-361148663]. She was the manifestation of all that was evil and scary for the much younger me. Things change of course.

Am I still scared of the wicked witch? Naturally not. She’s gone. Melted away. Every year around Chri… crap… anyway, Happy Halloween.

  1. To be honest, I had to do a search to figure out the characters’ name as it was only the scary green witch to me and I haven’t watched the movie since.
